Libra New Moon – October 12 – 13, 2015
The New Moon forms at 19 degrees, 20 minutes Libra at 5:07 pm PDT on October 12, and at 12:05 am GMT on October 13, 2015. Here we are in the wake of the Eclipse Cycle. Mercury turned direct at 00 degrees Libra on October 9. That same day, Venus returned to 00 degrees Virgo, having left Leo at last and achieved her July 25th degree of retrogradation. Venus and Mercury were busy on the 9th as they were occulted by the Moon on her way through Virgo and Libra and into her destiny as the New Moon we celebrate tonight. Occultation occurs when one planetary body passes directly between two other bodies. In this case, the Moon passes directly between the Earth and Venus and the Earth and Mercury. Venus and Mercury have been very active recently what with retrogrades and all. And the Moon’s been busy too. Moving ahead and on from her total eclipse in late September. Occultations are not terribly rare, but they don’t happen all the time either…. Sooo…. What are we to make of this? Is there a little something setting up behind the scenes?
First of all – all this Libra stuff! Yeah – that’s right. North Node at 1 degree Libra (setting up to move into Virgo in November and then there will be all this Virgo stuff!). Mercury is right there with them. And so is the asteroid Juno, who embodies the qualities and rhythms associated with uniting with and separating from a mate or partner. She is at 9 degrees. The Sun and Moon are at 19 degrees Libra. We’ve got an opposition of the Sun and New Moon to Uranus in Aries. These three are squaring Pluto in Capricorn. It’s a bit of a wide square, but it’s happening. Shades and shadows of the cardinal cross flickering across our consciousness. We’re being prompted to check in with our notions surrounding relationships.
We’re wondering if we should just sit tight. We’re wondering how these new energies are going to shape up. Libra can be tricky. Everything is so pleasant and balanced. So well-coordinated and seemingly serene. Uranus in Aries is aggressive and ready to rumble. You might imagine that the North Node, Sun, Moon, Mercury, and Juno are well placed and content in Libra, the sign of relationship. You might imagine that they are calm – even a bit passive in opposition to Uranus, the revolutionary, in Aries. You would be wrong. Libra may give the impression of unruffled tranquility, seamless diplomacy, and eternal graciousness but you may be sure that just beneath their well-tended surfaces, they are ANYTHING BUT passive. They are commanding, competitive, and made of much sterner stuff than you can imagine. “But they are the ‘sign of relationship’, “you say… Yes, they are. But don’t forget there are many different kinds of relationship – and not all of them are good… Libra does not like to fight. Libra loves conversation and they are quite accomplished in the arts of negotiation. However, Libra also hates to lose. So pay attention to what’s being said or you may quickly find that you’ve been bested!
The New Moon and the other planetary bodies in Libra opposite Uranus in Aries are calling for a relationship revolution. This is the beginning of the end of old paradigm of relationships of every stripe – particularly Male/Female relationship. Pluto in Capricorn, is slowly transforming societal structures. We’re in a period of consolidating the gains made since 2008. And we are assessing the possibilities and probabilities for future action. The recent movement toward marriage and gender equality show movement in this direction. It’s early days. And don’t kid yourself. There’s plenty of push back for every step forward. We’ve really only begun to take baby steps. Pluto is about halfway through Capricorn. By the time he’s done, the world will be a very different place.
I keep saying that the personal is political. Libra is where the personal becomes political. It is here that we take our personal concerns into our relationships with others. And that’s all of our relationships – not just the pleasant interactions – all interactions. Alliances are formed, broken, and reformed. If this is not politics at a personal scale, I don’t know what is. Dynasties, governments, armies, universities, cities, and neighborhood bake sales are based in relationship. As we stare into the eyes of our friend, lover, or foe, we see our own strengths and weaknesses reflected back to us. We are each other. The other is us. In fact, it’s all us. And that can be quite a revelation as well as a shock.
Currently Venus in Virgo is squaring Saturn in Sagittarius and opposing Neptune. They all seem to be involved in hashing out a new relationship constitution and working on expanding compassion, forgiveness, and divine love. You see, it all begins with how we treat each other – in person. It’s about how we take responsibility for our own actions, feelings and thoughts. And once we figure that out – if we figure that out…. Well then we’ll have some real progress. Saturn’s stay in Sagittarius will see much of this sort of activity. He wants to get all the philosophies and ideals, bylaws and guidelines committed to the new data base in the next two and a half years. Because when he joins up with Pluto in Capricorn …. Well, let’s say that things will really begin to move! And believe me, they’re going to move a fair bit before then.
So at this New Moon – make a decision. Are you on the boat to Saturn’s “City on the Hill”? Or will you stay here – right where you are, and stop now? Famous Libran, John Lennon, born on October 9 during the height of WWII was known to say and sing, “War is Over If You Want It” and “Give Peace a Chance”. He wrote some great songs. One of them was called “Starting Over”. The lyrics are seemingly personal but John was always a political man. Let’s see if we can take his personal message to his beloved and make it a universal one. Let’s sing it to each other. He’d like that. And it would do us all a lot of good.
This New Moon is a big one. Choose well.
