Leo Full Moon – January 23 – 24, 2016
It’s a bright night. The Moon is high in the sky. The Full Moon forms at 03 degrees, 29 minutes Leo, at 5:46 pm, PST on January 23, and at 1:45 am GMT on January 24, 2016. The Sun arrived in Aquarius three days earlier. There are no major aspects to the Moon or the Sun today. It’s just the two of them facing off in beautiful opposition, creating that superhighway of unrelenting radiant energy and faithful eternal reflection. Leo is the sign of the sovereign self – fully individuated and ready to take radical responsibility for its actions. It is the moment of full realization of one’s full potential and strengths as well as one’s potential flaws and weaknesses. So the Moon in her fullness tonight asks us: “Who are you and what do you want? How far have you come and how far have you yet to go?” The Sun in Aquarius advocates for the collective and for civilized cooperative efforts to move humanity forward. He is less concerned with the rights and responsibilities of the individual than with the philosophical ideas, efforts, and momentum of the group. The Sun does not ask questions. He simply states: “We are humankind. We have a sacred duty to ourselves, each other, and to all beings everywhere to progress and preserve civilization.” Either way you look at it – these are big shoes to fill. And you can’t have one without the other.
I think we can all agree that the first weeks of January, up to and including the New Moon were pretty upsetting. The Sun conjunct Pluto and the Mercury stationing retrograde, all in Capricorn was one thing – severe, leaden, and unyielding in its creation of an atmosphere of heaviness, hopelessness, and deep uncertainty. Add to that another square to Uranus as he conjoined the Moon in Aries! Well we didn’t need that! It was way more powerful and emotional than it needed to be.
And then David Bowie died on January 10th. That, you will remember, was the New Moon in Capricorn. It was two days after his 69th birthday. I really do believe that Bowie was “The Man Who Fell to Earth” – (or one of them anyway, Sun Ra was another…. But that’s a story for another day). Bowie was a Capricorn with Aquarius rising and the Moon and Saturn in Leo in the seventh house. He was a highly individuated being. He was extremely self-aware, and very motivated to not only express himself at any and all costs, but also impart knowledge, beauty, wisdom, self-acceptance, and self-love to all beings everywhere – to every single person he contacted through his art. When you think about it, he was the living embodiment of the Leo-Aquarius polarity. Moon in Leo asks: “Who are you and what do you want? How far have you come and how far have you to go?” Sun (in Bowie’s case, the rising sun on the day of his birth) declares: “We are humankind. We have a sacred duty to ourselves, each other, and to all beings everywhere to progress and preserve civilization.” Bowie worked both ends of the polarity with a vengeance. He did not hesitate to become himself. By doing this he became himself PLUS! He transcended his own being and became more. He consciously embodied the blinding light of a radiant Sun/Star, then turned, as the Moon does, to reflect to us, our own brilliance, beauty, and glorious humanity on stage and in life. He was an artist in the truest and most effective sense of the word. Those of us who were fortunate enough to see and hear this being know the true power he projected and generously shared. We are better humans for having had the experience of living in his time of influence and seeing his dazzling humanity, and our own blossom. He really was a Starman.
There are some aspects to look out for as we move ahead. Mercury will station direct on January 25 at 15 Capricorn. That should give us a little relief, I hope. Mercury retrograde isn’t just an inconvenience. Every time it comes around it’s an opportunity to review our thinking processes. Are you taking responsibility for your thoughts and words? Are you under the impression that you can think one way and act another? No, no, no! It’s all of a piece. It’s not haphazard. And in this time of mutable changing energies, it is important that you work with the MOST honest and precise version of your thoughts and actions, because where there’s room for misinterpretation and misunderstanding, that is exactly what you’ll get. Practice, practice, practice clear honest communication!
Jupiter conjuncts the North Node in Virgo at this Full Moon, reinforcing the need for discernment and precision. We are halfway through Pluto’s transit of Capricorn. We might want to take stock of how far we’ve come in the last eight years. Compare you to you. I predict you’ll see that you’ve made great progress. You’ve done the impossible and you’ll do it again. You’re ready for the next phase. You’re ready for anything! Remember:
There’s a starman waiting in the sky
He’d like to come and meet us
But he thinks he’d blow our minds.
There’s a starman waiting in the sky
He told us not to blow it
Cause he knows it’s all worthwhile.
He told me:
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie.
- David Bowie
