Capricorn Solstice / New Moon – December 21-22, 2014
The New Moon forms at 00 Degrees, 06 minutes Capricorn at 5:36 pm PST on December 21, and at 1:35 am GMT on December 22, 2014. About two and a half hours earlier we experience the Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere. The Solstices and Equinoxes announce the shifting of the seasons and help us to mark time and space. Ancient peoples searched for meaning in the night sky. As humans began to measure time and space, the heavens provided a template for these practices. The ancient Egyptians devised a method of telling time at night based on the heliacal rise of 36 dependable stars (one for each 10 degrees of the 360 degree circle). Solstices and the concept of the celestial sphere were central to celestial navigation as practiced by the ancient Greeks. Temples and monuments around the world have been built to align with the planets and the stars.
“As Above – So Below”. This is a phrase as old as human consciousness. We have always looked to the heavens for guidance, entertainment, solace, and enlightenment. This solstice marks the return of the light and the official beginning of winter in the northern hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere the daylight hours will grow shorter as the heat of summer intensifies.
Round and round we go. Last Monday we all danced another dance with Uranus and Pluto. It was a testy day. No one was in a very good mood. The Moon was in Libra on that day in opposition to Uranus in Aries and that didn’t make things any easier. One more of these squares is left in the cycle. But this last one was particularly nasty and contentious!
On December 20, Venus in Capricorn forms a conjunction with Pluto and a square to Uranus. Capricorn is not the warmest or fuzziest place for Venus. She’s all business and dressed to kill when she visits Cappy. Think: Marlene Dietrich, Ava Gardner, Faye Dunaway, Diane Keaton, and Kate Moss. This aspect will bring matters to a head in relationships that have been teetering on an edge of some sort. Don’t feel sorry for poor little Venus in this situation. She’s more than able to take care of herself. There’s an air of dissatisfaction and the potential for disruption, which, as we’ll see in the coming days and months, will be a theme for the coming year.
December 21 is a big day. Uranus in Aries stations direct at 2;45 pm. At 3:03 pm we have Solstice. And at 5:35 pm the Sun and Moon conjunct in Capricorn to form the New Moon. (All times PST). We currently have a ton of planets in Capricorn: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Pluto and the asteroid Vesta. That’s a serious lot of Saturnian energy! This is Santa shaking his finger at you and asking if you’ve been naughty or nice. So be good for goodness sake!!! No one can dole out the lumps of coal like Saturn. And on that note – guess who’s coming to town in December 23? Mr. Saturn will be moving into Sagittarius for a two and a half year stay (with a brief retrograde into Scorpio early next year). Not the worst placement for Saturn. It is, however, a bit of a buzz-kill in many ways. Sag likes to be free, fiery and expansive. Saturn likes to slow down and examine things. He also likes clarity, commitment, responsibility, discipline and practical action with regard to one’s ideals, philosophies and visions. He’s not going to tolerate high-flown pie in the sky blather about what you think or intend either. He wants conscious reasoned action. Saturn in Sag will inform and direct the gorgeous inspirational character of the sign. It might not be a comfortable fit at first, but once they and you get the hang of it – it will be quite powerful! Saturn in Sagittarius will require us work our program, walk the talk, and realize our ideals. This is an opportunity to make our visions and most dearly held beliefs real. Don’t sit on the sidelines muttering about how difficult it is.
We can all feel that something is up. The energies of 2015 have already begun. Things are going to change. There will be disruptions, interruptions, and change. Nothing is certain. Nothing! We can consult all the maps and charts and listen to all the opinions we like and still not be able to know with any sort of certainty what’s up ahead.
So do yourself a favor and stop thinking like that. The great divide that I’ve been speaking about is here. That small crack in the earth in the backyard that I talked about last January – it’s getting bigger and bigger and bigger. You know it. You haven’t wanted to look at it lately – but you know it. We are stepping into powerful times ahead. Don’t move with fear in your heart. Embrace the practical faith that Saturn in Sagittarius offers and calls forth at this time. Do the work! I know it sounds corny, but: Be the change you want to see in this world. Really – no more waiting to be the You that You know you are.
Bless us all at this Solstice as we embrace the New Year.
