Capricorn New Moon – January 1, 2014

Capricorn New Moon – January 1, 2014

The New Moon forms at 10 degrees, 57 minutes Capricorn at 3:14 am PST on January 1, 2014.  This New Moon is a SuperMoon.  A SuperMoon is a new or full moon that occurs at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.  There will be 5 SuperMoons on 2014.  Both new moons in January (the 1st and 30th) and the full moons of July, August, and September will be SuperMoons.  There will be two New Moons and one Full Moon in January.  It is a month of initiative and change.

I’m not going to attempt to review 2013.  Everyone who was paying attention knows what happened. The eclipses of October and November coupled with the fourth of seven (the centerpiece or keystone of this series) exact Uranus –Pluto squares set the stage for the reconciliation and realignments that took place in December.  The solstice dawned as a clear spot – a new and expansive clarity.  Still, there has been a feeling being at the end of something.  We’ve come to the end of the beginning.

But this is not an intermission, nor is it the actual end of anything.  I guess we could call it Phase Two. This New Moon in Capricorn is conjunct Mercury, Pluto and of course, the Sun.  Venus is at 26 degrees Capricorn and is retrograde but too far advanced by degree to qualify for a conjunction. Still, she lends her presence to the gathering in Capricorn.  This is a lot of Capricorn energy.  But Pluto claims the spotlight now and occupies the center of the Capricorn stellium.  As Lord of the Underworld he is usually content to wield his power from the comfort of his shadowy kingdom.  Pluto’s concern is transformation – pure but maybe not so simple!  And he is not particularly concerned with how this transformation takes place.  Rest assured however; change will occur.  If you think you can wait Pluto out – think again.  He’s got plenty of “time”. This rare emergence on the first day of the New Year, flanked by the luminaries is worth your time and attention.

The planets in Capricorn anchor one arm of the Cardinal Grand Cross.  Pluto opposes Jupiter in Cancer and squares Uranus in Aries and Mars in Libra.  The Cardinal signs falling in Cardinal houses activate the four directions.  Uranus in Aries activates first house issues of identity and selfhood.  Jupiter in Cancer activates fourth house concerns for home, family, security and survival.  Mars in Libra activates the seventh house and the partnership axis (Aries/self and Libra/other) bringing relationship matters into the equation.  Pluto in Capricorn highlights issues of power, authority, community and government.  Cardinal signs in Cardinal houses want to initiate action.  With all four Cardinal points in play the potentials for movement toward the center and/or polarization are equal.  But one thing is certain.  There will be movement.  The Grand Cross will be in effect from mid-December through mid-January.  This is the first of three Grand Crosses that will form this year, all involving the same planets.  Persons and entities with planetary placements or sensitive points at mid degrees of the cardinal signs will feel the effects of the Grand Crosses most strongly.  I want to stress that although this condition is most exact now, in mid-April and again in mid-June, it is ongoing.

The big questions are being asked.  Aries:  “Who am I?”  Cancer:  “How will I survive?” Libra:  “Who are we in relationship?”  Capricorn:  “How do we not only survive but prosper, grow, and transform.”  These questions hang in our consciousness and on the scaffolding of our existence.  Are we really making any progress or are we just playing for time – stalling, hoping that it will all get better and go away if we concentrate on something else.  Pluto’s conjunction with the Sun and New Moon on New Year’s Day is a proclamation.  We have had plenty of time to get used to the idea of change.  We’ve actually had a lot of practice.  We’ve had hundreds of illustrations and examples of what needs changing.  We actually know what to do.  We need to ACT– and fast.  Pluto is losing patience.  And that’s a lot of patience to loose!

Imagine that there’s a crack in the earth in your back yard.  For the first couple of years after it appeared, you didn’t think much about it.  Then it started to get a little larger.  Not big or anything – just a little larger and slightly longer.  A year later the crack is wider and now you can see down into it – but it’s still only about 10 inches across.  This is how Pluto works. He works slowly but surely, inexorably, and eventually thoroughly.  He moved into Capricorn (the cardinal Earth sign) in 2008.  He will be in Capricorn through 2025.  Seventeen years is a long time.  Everything can change in a minute but imagine how much can change in seventeen years.  You might want to start thinking about that crack in the backyard.  Pretty soon it’s going to be really difficult to get to what’s on the other side of it.  If you’re fine with that – great.  But if there’s something over there that you think you might want to salvage you’d better do something about it.  Conversely, if there’s something you’d like to exile to the other side – do it soon.

The first half of 2014 will be about deciding and acting.  We have benefic aspects from Saturn, Chiron, Neptune, and Jupiter in water signs in trine aspect.  But don’t abuse their good will.  The impetus and support for change is present now.  2014 – Day One – Use the power of the Sun, Moon and Pluto.  Set your intentions.  Act from your heart.  You can’t fail.  Blessings to All for an active and transformative New Year!
