Cancer Full Moon – December 25, 2015
The Full Moon forms at 03 degrees, 19 minutes Cancer at 3:11 am PST on December 25, 2015. This is the first full moon to fall on Christmas Day since 1977. I remember that one. But possibly you do not. In any case, the next one will be in 2034. Something to look forward to. The Full Moon in the newly minted winter night sky is a sight to behold! Bright white in the dark black-blue sky, she illuminates the landscape and the dark dusty corners of our dreams. Moon, Moon, companion Moon, beautiful Moon, Mother Moon. She’s in the sign of Cancer, sign of the mother and the domicile of the Moon herself. All in all it’s a peaceful and thoughtful Full Moon. There’s a noticeable break in the action. A continuation of the time between times that will follow us to the New Year.
The Cancer- Capricorn polarity initiates the two Solstices. The Summer Solstice is marked by the Sun’s entry into Cancer. The sign brings awareness to the energies of the home and family, an awakening to the ego self and the hierarchy of family and social experience. It also grants great sensitivity to the emotions of the self and others, and an entry point into the earthly experience of being human. At the Winter Solstice as we move into Capricorn we move away from the individual and relationship oriented human experiences of the first nine signs. We become more concerned with communal and transpersonal experience. We begin to hunger in earnest for reunion with all that is. Daylight begins to increase gradually now in the northern hemisphere, showing us the way, urging us forward to spring and rebirth.
The Full Moon in Cancer trines Neptune in Pisces and the asteroid goddess Juno (ruler of the institution of marriage and Jupiter’s consort/wife) in Scorpio. The Sun sextiles both Neptune and Juno. This is a classic “kite” formation. The enormous compassion and depth of feeling inherent in both the Moon and Neptune in the signs of their rulership combined with the transformational passion, sexual intensity, and lust for power of Juno in Scorpio gives this formation a great deal of emotional ballast. It’s a virtual powder keg of feelings that manages to contain itself given the relative calm that surrounds us now. The power and momentum generated by the Full Moon and the trine moves toward the Sun in Capricorn, at the top of the kite formation. He in turn sextiles Juno and Neptune and acts to ground the substantial and profound emotions of the Grand Trine in Water.
Cardinal signs are gateways. Capricorn like Cancer is a cardinal sign of initiation and action. One is earth and the other is water. One is physical reality and structure. The other is the dreamtime and pure emotion. The Full Moon usually brings a scenario to its peak moment, allowing for heightened awareness followed by eventually waning of interest. As the next new Moon approaches, a new situation develops, requiring that a new intention be set. This Full Moon, however carries both energies. One thing finishes and another is simultaneously born in its immediate wake. The Solstice promises more light and the Full Moon instantly provides just that this year. In the midst of cardinal energies, change and action, there is also stillness and time for reflection. All is calm. All is bright. Reflect on what’s come and gone this year. Craft your intention carefully. Have it ready for the New Moon on January 9-10, 2016.
Uranus stations direct on Christmas Day giving us extra vitality and innovative oomph to move full speed ahead into the New Year. We are rapidly and finally beginning to figure out how to integrate the lessons of those Uranus-Pluto squares. The roadblocks have been lifted and most of us are ready to go. Uranus is just over halfway through his transit of Aries. There’s been a lot of social and personal upheaval since Uranus entered Aries in March 2011. Expect to see substantial changes in government, military, and religious structures over the coming two years as a result of the off and on trine relationship between Uranus in Aries and Saturn in Sagittarius. (And every time the Moon passes thru Leo, we’ll have a grand trine in fire – don’t forget that!) These two (three) are ready to move some major, major mojo. And given Saturn’s exaltation in Libra, there could even be far-reaching changes in both national, international, inter-planetary and inter-galactic law. Big changes ahead as we shall see!
Mercury in Capricorn trines Jupiter and the North Node in Virgo now. This is a lovely signature of expansive mind and dedication of the mind to health, service and the general well-being of humanity. And Venus will move from Scorpio into Sagittarius on December 12/29, where she will take the high road in matters of philosophy as well as personal and societal values. And really, there’s not a lot of significant stuff happening until January. A conjunction here or there. A little flare of temper when Mercury squares Mars as Venus moves house. No biggie.
So the way is clear. It may seem a bit too quiet. The landscape may feel a bit sparse and maybe even too wide open. The stillness and hard brilliance of the winter sky may seem a bit hard to bear. Feel into the sky you see. Then move beyond into the sky you cannot see but can only imagine. Finally, let your being wander and wonder into blissful unknowing and tranquil stillness where everything is new and renewed. The stars are brilliant and the moon shines like an enormous searchlight tonight. Silent Night. Holy night. All is calm. All is bright. Feel the space between the spaces. Feel the time between the times.
May your special stars keep you and guide you. Blessings to All. And to All a goodnight!
