Cancer Full Moon – January 4-5, 2015

The Full Moon forms at 14 degrees, 30 minutes Cancer at 8:53 pm PST on January 4 and at 4:53 am GMT on January 5, 2015. Today Earth reaches perihelion, making her closest approach to the Sun. January in the northern hemisphere finds Earth about 147 million kilometers from the Sun. In July, Earth is about 152 million kilometers away. At the winter solstice, Earth’s southern hemisphere is tilted closer to the Sun. The December solstice and the January perihelion are coincidental, however, as the date of perihelion appears drift forward with every year. Centuries ago, they were closer together. But the last time that perihelion and the winter solstice coincided was in 1246. Perihelion advances one full calendar day about every 60 years. At that rate perihelion will happen at the Vernal Equinox in about 6000 AD. ** Can’t wait for that – can you?!!! Talk about climate change!!!
Happy New Year! And happy birthday to Isaac Newton, born January 4, 1643 (using the Julian calendar he was born December 25, 1642, in the same year as Galileo’s death. The English did not adopt the Gregorian calendar until later). Newton laid the foundation for our understanding of celestial motion, light, gravity, and the physical universe. We were forever changed by this knowledge and we are forever in your debt, Sir Isaac!
This full moon in Cancer reassembles the Cardinal Grand Cross of last year. The Sun conjuncts Pluto in Capricorn and squares both Uranus and the South Node in Aries and the North Node in Libra. The Sun and Pluto are opposite the Moon in Cancer, of course. Not only is this a new year – these are new times! The Sun-Pluto conjunction both shines a light on the darkness of the underworld, momentarily exposing the true nature of transformation as it simultaneously exposes our personal and collective obsessions, egos, and carefully constructed personas. Big hint here: It’s not all love and light and bunnies and rainbows.
Sun and Pluto square Uranus and the South Node in Aries speaks to our need shed our collective and personal karmas – old habits, favorite patterns, and cherished illusions that not only don’t serve us- but that will prove to be dangerous and perhaps even life-threatening as we move forward. This full moon is a real turning point – for everyone. The square to the North node in Libra suggests that adjustments and decisions made NOW (and adhered to in future) will have good results. This is a real chance to declare freedom from whatever’s been dogging you this lifetime.
The full moon in Cancer opposite Sun and Pluto and square the Nodes acknowledges that this is a tough call – and that it feels incredibly uncertain, uncomfortable, unfair, and downright risky. She knows what it feels like to be afraid and uncertain. She knows that you’d really rather not make these difficult gut wrenching choices. Never forget, however, that Cancer is a Cardinal sign. Cardinal water is not afraid to feel. And having felt the truth of something will absolutely act, risking life, limb, and security – sometimes with startling swiftness. This full moon lends you her truth and courage to make the choices you know must be made now. Whatever is trying to drag you back into the underworld must be banished. It must be a clean clear choice. This configuration with the full moon will be short in duration but it resonates back to the grand crosses and eclipses of 2014. It is a referendum on all the work you’ve done since we began this series of challenges in 2012. It is not to be taken lightly. The catharsis of the full moon will be huge. I know I’m rather shocked by a lot of the stuff I’ve been thinking and feeling lately! And it may leave you blinking and reeling for a while – but you’ll be fine soon enough.
And to get you back on track we’ll have a lot of Aquarian energy moving around. Mercury and Venus will join Mars in Aquarius this week. That’s a good thing. It will help us to focus on the future. Mercury is Aquarius is innovative, scientific, cool-headed, Utopian (for better or worse – depending on whether you agree with his politics), and stubborn – again, for better or worse. Venus is sociable in Aquarius. She’s humanitarian, futuristic and friendly and gregarious but not exactly warm. Aquarius is a great place for Mars to stretch out and use his considerable energies for the common good. He can be quite effective when he works for a good cause. He’s currently opposing Jupiter in Leo but the worst thing that could happen there is that the pair of them would be overly confident and create something massively impressive but not terribly good or useful. Perhaps something on the order of a Jeff Koons sculpture.
Oh, and by the way, Mercury will be retrograde in Aquarius January 21 – February 11.
It’s time to settle up. Let the past be past. Time to decide. The coming energies of 2015 center on the mutable signs and require us to translate and disseminate our truths to the wider world. Cultivate clarity and integrity. These are New Times. They call for a totally new approach.
